Parts of Speech

In elementary school, you learned the parts of speech.  In middle school, you will review these parts of speech and learn how to diagram sentences.  We will use songs, activities with manipulatives, and worksheets to help us review.

REMEMBER:  As you learn new vocabulary, pay attention to the part of speech of each word!

 

Nouns are words that name a person, place, thing or idea (tide, water, ocean, Pacific Ocean, school, student)

Pronouns are words that take the place of a noun (he, she, it, they, we, I, hers ours, mine)

Verbs are action words or being words. (dive, swim, am, was, is, eat, grow)

Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. (here, often, happily, fast, there)

Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns.  (red, bright, many, thick, sparkling)

Prepositions are words that begin phrses that show relationships.  (above, at, from, about, on, under, with, to)

Conjunctions are words that connect words, phrases or clauses.  (and, or, until, as, because, but, for, if)

Interjections are words that express strong feelings.  (Hooray!  Whoa!  Wow!  Yes!  Ouch!)
